Brown spots and freckles can be caused by sun damage and aging. Years of sun exposure can lead to unattractive brown spots on the face, neck, chest and hands.
Brown spots are most commonly found in adults over the age of 50 (but also occur in younger people). These spots are normally not cancerous but can be removed for cosmetic reasons.
Laser treatment ablates (removes) the top layer of skin at the site of the brown spot and allows the skin to heal afterwards. In most cases, laser treatment can significantly fade or even remove brown spots and freckles.
After treatment, the treated area may appear pink, red or brown. It generally heals quickly and is best left alone. It should not need a dressing as long as you can resist picking and scratching, and can avoid sunlight. Normally, the healing process takes about a week.
